European cruise market up for grabs

BRUSSELS 09 February – A few more cruise ships orders are likely to be placed soon as there are still slots available at yards for delivery in 2010, according to Pier Luigi Foschi, CEO of Costa Crociere in Italy. Foschi was speaking in Brussels on Tuesday at an event of the European Cruise Council, of which he is the chairman. He did not elaborate on which lines were likely to order new tonnage in the near future, but he pointed out that low penetration of cruising in Europe despite rising passenger numbers provides an excellent platform for much further growth. The European cruise market has grown at about 10% per year since 2001 to 3.3M passengers in 2005, the latest year for which figures are available, but still only one per cent of the European population has ever taken a cruise. Foschi noted that the combined value of newbuilding deliveries, which amounted to just euro3.7Bn ($4.7Bn) in 2005, is now in the region of euro5.0Bn per year and will remain at this level for a few years. Foschi is also member of the board of Carnival Corp & PLC, the world’s largest cruise shipping company.
